Cannabis Types: Indica vs. Sativa vs. Hybrid

Even if you are new to cannabis, it is likely you have seen or heard the term Indica and Sativa. But what do these terms mean and how to they affect you?

Indica strains are known for being very relaxing, calming your body and mind after a long day at work. Sativas typically provide more energetic, uplifting cerebral effects that make them a great pair with physical activity, social engagements, and creative projects. Hybrids tend to fall somewhere in between the indica-sativa spectrum, inheriting characteristics from both indicas and sativas.

These perceived differences can be helpful to cannabis patients when choosing the strain to best treat their symptoms and conditions. For instance, a patient suffering from fatigue or depression may consider a sativa during the day. On the other hand, a patient suffering from pain and insomnia will likely choose an indica to help alleviate any unwanted conditions before bed.

There are hundreds of compounds found in cannabis, but the two types of compounds most people refer to are cannabinoids and terpenes. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are molecular structures with unique properties and medical benefits. Terpenes are the oils that give cannabis different aromas. Terpenes help modulate the effects of cannabinoids, and have their own set of effects.

In addition to their medical benefits, indicas and sativas also have noticeable differences in appearance. Indicas are believed to originated in Hindu Kush region near Afghanistan, where they developed thick coats of resin as protection against the harsh climate and conditions, whereas sativas thrive in much warmer climates closer to the equator.

Indicas are usually bushy, short, and produce a heavier yields. Sativas are tall, skinny, and produce low to medium yields. Sativas also have a longer maturation cycle than indicas.
